I am starting this devotional created by Gretchen Martin titled Stand Firm. She begins day one with Adam and Eve being deceived by the serpent in the garden. “Did God really say,” is how the enemy gets you. The deadly characteristics of the enemy begin with greed, envy curiosity and selfishness.

In the beginning of Genesis, we are being provided for with God’s beautiful creation. The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters and next thing you know we’ve got a fully furnished home. Then, God decided to share this beautiful earth with someone worthy. The only thing God felt was valuable to enjoy this was mankind made in His image. Male and female he created them.

While Adam enjoyed the garden God created for Him, God also gave him work. In the east of Eden, the garden needed to be worked and cared for. Along with this responsibility, the Lord gave Adam one command regarding the garden. He told Adam not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. After He made this clear to Adam, God knew it was not good for His creation to be alone so He created Eve to be his suitable helper. The word of God highlights that Adam and his wife were both naked and felt no shame.

Now starting in Genesis three, the serpent tests the woman God created from Adam. How did the serpent know to go to the woman? Why didn’t he go directly to Adam? After all, God gives the command directly to Adam. Adam made sure to tell Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge knowing good and evil. It seems there was a little miscommunication between Adam and Eve because Eve told the serpent she could not even touch it or she’d die. Eve was unclear on the word of God, she began to question Gods authority. We give the enemy an assist the second it senses that we are unclear on the commandments we have been given.

After Eves curiosity grew due to the influence of the serpent, she took a bite from the fruit and led Adam to do so as well. Both of their eyes were opened and felt shame immediately from the exposure of their naked bodies.

The enemy tries to get us to question the goodness of God. It gets in our head and makes us think that God is keeping something better from us then we start to develop a selfish mind like the enemy. 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us “to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” In order for us to be equipped with battling the enemy from our minds, we need to be obedient and knowledgeable of the word of God.

Heavenly Father, I pray that you give us the knowledge to become suitable helpers for the men in our life. Help us recognize when the enemy is prowling around us and have our minds prepared to combat it with scripture from your word. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
