Genesis 3:8-13
Welcome back to day two of Gretchen Martins devotional, Stand firm. Today, she covers what happens after Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree. Starting in Genesis 3:8-13, God shares the interaction he had with the two sinners.
“Then, the man and his wife heard the sound of God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God.” God quickly notices that something is wrong because He has to go look for them. The Lord God called out to the man and Adam answered “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” Adams disobedience birthed fear of the Father. “And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” God is giving Adam an opportunity to confess what he had done. Adam replies, “The women you put here with me - she gave some fruit from the tree and I ate it.” Adams response insinuates if God had never created Eve this wouldn’t have happened and then puts blame on Eve. God trusted Adam to lead and protect Eve instead he failed God and led he and his wife away from the presence of God. “Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me and I ate.” If Eve had known who the serpent was and its intention she would’ve known it was not from God.
Adam and Eve never took accountability for what they had done and led the fall of mankind. It is in our nature, as flawed humans, to point the finger instead of confessing. We convince ourselves that if we don’t confess everything will be alright. But God, who knows us better than we know ourselves, knows we aren’t perfect. He understands why we’ve inherited this fear inside of us when we sin. His mercy gives us the way to reconcile our relationship with Him. His son, Jesus Christ, who paid for all of our sins so that we can be in the presence of God again.
Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your one and only Son to pay for the damage our human nature has done and continues to do. Thank you for giving us a chance to be back in your presence. I pray that you deliver us from the evil one, Father, protect us from the danger that leads us away from you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
